The Legacy Returns

InterContinental Dhaka once bore witness to the horrors of the Liberation War of Bangladesh. The hotel became an integral part of the history of Bangladesh as it sheltered foreign dignitaries and reporters at the time of war. Rafa Mashiyat Zahid talks to Shahidus Sadeque, director marketing and business promotions, and Syeda Faica Fareea, assistant communication manager, of InterContinental Dhaka to find out more about the legendary hotel that has once again returned to Dhaka after 35 years

During Bangladesh’s Liberation War in 1971, the then Intercontinental Dhaka was declared a neutral zone by the International Red Cross. Though the newspaper offices and university halls in the surrounding areas were targeted by the Pakistani military, the hotel stood tall as a sanctuary of hope during the nine-month-long war. Daily Telegraph reporter Simon Dring and Mark Tali of BBC and many other reputed journalists stayed in this very hotel and wrote reports about the war.

Recently, InterContinental Dhaka has been re-launched after a thorough revamping of its exterior and interior. Originally Designed by William B. Tabler, an American architect who specialized in ‘designing hotels for efficiency, rather than charm,’ the new look cost a fortune. Bangladesh Services Limited, a state-run company, renovated the hotel at a cost of Tk 620 crore, according to a UNB report.
