Meninism

By Elora Majumder

We’re highly focused on women empowerment in today’s world and in every way it should continue the same as women if empowered, can do wonders and bring a magnificent change with their diversified qualities. However, in order to do so, are we reversely discriminating at times? Are we sometimes being a bit unfair to the male population?

The words ‘Meninist’ and ‘Meninism’ are infrequently heard but rarely taken into consideration.

According to common understanding, Meninism does not only refer to men’s rights but it is a concept that describes various groups including male feminists. It was first used in the early 2000s to describe male feminists who opposed sexism and supported women’s right for equality in society, politics, at work and everywhere. By the next decade, the term was used on social media to make jokes which mocked and criticized radical feminism.

The movement for Meninism:

Meninists have used the term to discuss serious issues affecting men:

  • Domestic violence against men: The men often share similar security needs like female victims, but they also experience gender-specific barriers to accessing security and justice caused, in part, by the fact that the issue of social and domestic violence (SDV) against men remains shrouded in silence and misconceptions. Men also go through a lot of domestic violence and do not complain about it in the fear of ruining reputation. With this in mind, there should be a way to enable security sector institutions to provide a more effective, gender-sensitive approach to prevent and respond to SDV against men.
  • Fathers’ rights and divorce issues: For a father, custody can be difficult to win, even though there is no discrimination against dads. Whether a father is going for full custody or joint custody, they always have to battle hard for the custody, especially if the child’s mother is also filing for custody.
  • In divorce, in most cases, the husband will get the short end of the stick in the divorce settlement whether it’s losing the house or full child custody while also getting stuck with alimony and child support payments.

But men have just as much of a right to win in a divorce settlement as women do.

Male suicide rates and other difficulties: Men’s suicide rates may be influenced by difficulties that lead to depression symptoms. The masculine norms of violence and playboy were correlated with men’s suicidal ideation. An externalizing-internalizing model of predicting suicide in men and men’s adherence to certain masculine gender role norms may be valuable to further efforts in suicide assessment and prevention.

All the downside that the society gives to men leads them to take a harsh decision and do something wrong to themselves.

The Hashtag ‘#’ (Meninist):

According to Radhika Sanghani of The Telegraph, the hashtag is most commonly used on Twitter to mock feminism but has also been used as a way to draw attention to men’s issues, similar to “The Red Pill” forum on Reddit. The posts from twitter, while meant to be satirical, are retweeted and commented on by others in a serious manner and not indicated to anything again women.

The hashtag is also printed on t-shirts and worn by people who do not support reverse discrimination.

Although the use of the hashtag now advocates men’s rights and criticizes women for objectifying men but it was originally hijacked from male feminists.

The way from now:

As we all raise voice against any mistreatment towards women, we should do the same for men as well. In order to promote equality, we should not demean men rather give men and women equal opportunities.

If a man raises voice against any unpleasant thing happening to him, that should be given higher priority (that is given to a woman) and not get ignored completely.

The rights of men are equally important and acceptable like the rights of women and there should not be a patriarchy dominant society.
