Webinar Series on Gender-Based Violence Episode 2

Evolution 360 is always working to ensure women empowerment and try to aware everyone about women empowerment so that they can also work to make a gender-friendly society. In continuation of this Keeping in mind the occasion of 16 days of activism and the #WeCommit campaign by UN Women to combat sexual harassment at workplace, Evolution360 a youth organization and ally of UN Women’s #WeCommit jointly with Manusher Jonno Foundation is organizing a webinar in affiliation with We Empower, UN Women. On 12th December 2020, Episode 2 of this webinar series had conducted. The topic of Episode 1 was Combating Gender-Based Violence in Corporate World and Executing #WeCommit By UN Women.

In Episode 2 Chief Guest was Shoko Ishikawa, Country Representative, UN Women Bangladesh. As a Guest of Honor Shaheen Anam, Executive Director, Manusher Jonno Foundation attended this webinar.

Besides as a panellist Sonia Bashir Kabir, Founder, SBK Tech Ventures, M. Khorshed Anowar, Head of Retail & SME Banking, Eastern Bank Ltd. and Farzanah Chowdury (ACII UK), MD & CEO, Green Delta Insurance Company joined in Episode 2 of this webinar series.

In this live discussion, guests have highlighted the good practices of their companies regarding SDG 05 and talked about the condition of GBV in Bangladesh. Besides in the present scenario, we can see there is no perfect law and order against gender-based harassment. In this perspective Chief guest, Shoko Ishikawa said, “UN, as well as NGOs, are working in collaboration to try and advocate for sexual harassment, legislation taking a beyond to high-court directly”. Except this, she gave a deep elaboration about 7 principles of women empowerment.

Guest of honour Shaheen Anam from Manusher Jonno Foundation said, “Every organization who has a certain number of employees need to form an anti-sexual harassment committee”. According to her in every morning a woman firstly manages her households then come to her workplace so we all have to behave well with her.

Panellist Sonia Bashir Kabir who is from SBK Tech Ventures and also a tech master added a new dimension in this webinar. According to her, in IT firm amount of male employees is more than female employees. A very tiny amount of female ultimately works in the IT sector. In that case, in the IT sector probability of sexual harassment is usually more than any other sectors. This is why she said, “While recruitment we need to check if there are any allegations on anyone about sexual harassment in their previous workplace”. Besides she focused on zero tolerance principles in the workplace if a woman faces sexual and mental harassment.

Another panellist M. Khorshed Anowar emphasizes on speak up policy. According to her, every woman must raise her voice against any sexual harassment. He said, “Every company must have a speak-up policy, anti-sexual committee. To moderate this HR team must be honest and strong”. According to him except mental well-being workers cannot work properly. Especially when women being harassed sexually and mentally in their work their mental state get damaged and its effects on their work. For this productivity of a sector in any company get destroyed.

Lastly, Farzanah Chowdury emphasizes on establishing SDG 5 in the corporate sector. According to her, “We need to work about harassment policy and it is necessary to establish SDG 5 everywhere”.
