6 Fun Facts about City of Magic – Dhaka

The economic and ethnic hub of the country, Dhaka or formerly known as Dacca, is just not a mere name, it’s the name of a feeling. It’s a thousand vivid dreams in five little letters. The city of 17 million although always gushing with chaotic traffic, is buzzing with cultural and heritage elements capable of painting vibrant images in the heart of avid sightseers. Today we are going to uncover a few facts among thousands about this city of magic, city of love – Dhaka.

Among the many theories regarding the name Dhaka, the most popular suggestion is that it originates from the hidden goddess Dhakeshwari. However, it could also be named for dhak trees or dhak, the musical instrument.

Dhaka is considered the Rickshaw Capital of the world, with more than 800,000 rickshaw pullers in the city. According to estimates, rickshaws can run Bangladesh for about a month with approximately $4.8 billion.

Dhaka is addicted to “Cha”! Rickshaw drivers claim to drink up to 20 cups a day. If it can give them the power to fight their way through Dhaka, there must be something special about it. These sweet, milky, hot cups of tea are a Bangladeshi style caffeine fix.

Dhaka is the home to a 300 year old market. Shankhari Bazaar, known locally as Hindu Street, is a vibrant splash of color, culture and cacophony.The area was first settled 300 years ago by Hindu artisans, and the descendants of the original settlers till this day continue to hold the heritage upright with their crafts in tiny workshops tucked away in narrow alleyways with rich architectural establishments from that age.
